Stanford’s home losing streak continues with painful, 27-24 loss to Wake Forest

STANFORD – Stanford lost its 12th straight home game against FBS competition, this time in heartbreaking fashion.

Ashton Daniels was intercepted at the 10-yard line with 22 seconds left as Wake Forest beat the Cardinal 27-24 at Stanford Stadium.

Freshman Elijah Brown got his first career start at QB, but Stanford (2-6, 1-4 ACC) went 3-and-out on its first possession and then Brown was intercepted on an overthrow.

Down 14-0 after three possessions, the Cardinal switched back to Daniels, the team’s two-year starter. Daniels immediately led a touchdown drive, completing all six of his passes for 61 yards.

Stanford tied the game at 14-14 when junior edge Tavarua Tafiti stripped Wake Forest quarterback Hank Bachmeier, recovered a fumble and ran 44 yards for the score.

Wake (4-4, 2-2) led 24-17 for the entire third quarter, but Bachmeier was stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 1:29 remaining in the period. Stanford proceeded to go on a game-tying 99-yard drive, capped off by a 16-yard touchdown catch from Sam Roush that saw the junior tight end break three tackles with 8:41 left in the game.
