The San Antonio Spurs have vaulted themselves into title contention this season with a strong cast surrounding franchise superstar Victor Wembanyama.
But while the team does look pretty good as presently constructed, they’ve also been linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo for the past few months. Now, with NBA insider Shams Charania reporting that the 2021 Finals MVP is ready for a change of scenery, the Spurs could be one of the few teams making a major push for the star.
Any deal getting back Antetokounmpo would require San Antonio to likely give up one of their two young backcourt players in Stephon Castle or Dylan Harper, but the chance to pair the Greek Freak with Wembanyama is almost impossible to turn down, despite how good the group has been playing this season.
Spurs’ Potential Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Package
Writing for Bleacher Report, Andy Bailey outlined a potential package the Spurs could send back to the Milwaukee Bucks to land Antetokounmpo before the February 5th trade deadline.
San Antonio Spurs get: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Thanasis Antetokounmpo
Milwaukee Bucks get: Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, Dylan Harper, a 2030 first-round pick, and a 2032 first-round pick
“Doing so wouldn’t be cheap, though. Milwaukee would almost certainly insist on at least one of Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, and the latter’s skill level makes him look like an easy player to build around for the future,” he wrote on this trade idea. “Harper and the movable deals of Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson would make this a good haul for the Bucks on the player front. And adding two far-flung firsts on top of that might make this the best package of the bunch outlined here.”
Charania added that Milwaukee would be looking to get back ‘blue-chip talent and/or a surplus of draft picks‘ for Antetokounmpo, and the Spurs have both. While this deal has a little of each, the Bucks getting back Castle and a strong group of assets in the form of the other players, as well as a few first-rounders, it’s a package that rivals what the rest of the league could offer.
Writing for ESPN, Bobby Marks discussed how San Antonio has a better chance than many other teams at making a trade for Antetokounmpo before the deadline. Based on their assets and young players, it would just come at the cost of moving either Castle or Harper.
The idea of Wembanyama paired with Antetokounmpo could likely be the scariest in the NBA, as both are lethal on both sides of the court, and would drastically change what the term ‘twin-towers’ means in basketball terms. The Spurs are a team to watch out for as Antetokounmpo rumors heat up over the next few days.
Spurs Trade Rumors
Besides the idea of adding Antetokounmpo, one player in particular has been mentioned as potentially on the move for San Antonio. That would be Jeremy Sochan, who, after a decent few first seasons in the league, has been buried down the rotation on their roster this year.
The Spurs have reportedly been in talks with Sochan about a potential move, according to insider Marc Stein, and the New York Knicks have stood out as a potential target for the 22-year-old wing.
San Antonio would likely get back Guerschon Yabusele and Pacome Dadiet in a deal, a move that would see the former paired back up with his French National team partner in Wembanyama.
Besides the new discussions on Sochan and the talks about a deal for Antetokounmpo, the Spurs haven’t been mentioned too much in other NBA trade rumors. They have a strong foundation with a ton of young talent, and if it’s either a small deal to retool around the edges, or a massive one to add a generational talent, their making a mid-level move before the deadline seems unlikely.
