MILPITAS – A 23-year-old inmate has died of traumatic injuries he suffered in an assault last week at the Elmwood Correctional Facility in Milpitas, according to authorities.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office announced the inmate’s death in a news release Tuesday night.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time,” Sheriff Robert Jonsen said in the release.
Three other inmates have been identified as suspects. They are now facing murder and torture charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said the case “highlights the unique challenges of managing safety in a jail setting.”
“The sheriff’s office has established protocols designed to maintain security, with staff conducting frequent checks to monitor activity, well-being, and deter violence,” the sheriff’s office said. “Despite these precautions, incidents can still occur.”
Deputies found the victim unconscious and suffering from severe injuries around noon on Jan. 27. He was taken to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery for traumatic head wounds.
The sheriff’s office disclosed details about the assault after San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP President Sean Allen sent a letter to Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors President Susan Ellenberg seeking “complete transparency regarding this incident.”
Allen said the inmate was “targeted by multiple gang members who mistakenly identified him as a rival gang member” and that the attack lasted 20 to 25 minutes.
“Our organization has significant concerns regarding this incident,” Allen said. “It is alarming that the attack took place without intervention from law enforcement. We question why this individual was placed in an environment where his life was at risk.”
Jonsen said his agency is “taking every measure possible to prevent such incidents from happening again.”
“We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in our custody,” he continued.
Criminal and administrative investigations are underway. The sheriff’s office said it is also working with the Santa Clara County Office of Correction and Law Enforcement Monitoring to review safety protocols.
“We are fully cooperating with all relevant authorities to ensure those responsible for this violent attack are held accountable,” Jonsen said. “We remain committed to transparency and will keep the public informed as we learn more about this incident.”
