Sky finalizing a trade to acquire Rebecca Allen

Days after being dealt by the Mercury to the Sun, Rebecca Allen is on the move again.

According to multiple league sources, the Sky are finalizing a trade to acquire the 6-2 Australian guard/forward who will help answer their three-point shooting needs. The Sun will receive point guard Lindsay Allen and the rights to forward Nikolina Milić. Allen was dealt to the Sun along with guard Natasha Cloud and the No. 12 pick in an agreed-to trade earlier this week sending five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas and Ty Harris to the Mercury.

Injuries have limited Allen over the past two seasons. She missed the entire second half of the WNBA season last year after sustaining a hamstring injury during the Olympics. In September, she had surgery to address a back injury, which kept her out for the postseason. She averaged 7.4 points and 3.9 rebounds for the Mercury in 18 games last season.

She is healthy and without any restrictions coming into the 2025 season.

The Sky had the second-worst offensive rating in the WNBA last season and made the fewest three-pointers, averaging just 4.8 per game. General manager Jeff Pagliocca explicitly stated his priority in free agency and through the draft would be filling out the Sky’s backcourt with a veteran point guard and a lengthy wing who could help them space the floor.

The first step was signing Courtney Vandersloot, the Sky’s former franchise player and point guard who helped lead them to their first WNBA title in 2021. Trading for Allen gives them a reliable three-point threat without having to deal any of their valuable draft assets.

The Sky are still looking for an off-ball guard to play alongside Vandersloot and Allen in the starting lineup. According to league sources the Sky have had multiple conversations with teams about dealing the No. 3 pick. Pagliocca could still look to move it if an All-Star caliber player is on the table. There are still several valuable free agents available that the Sky could pursue if Pagliocca decides to hold on to the lottery pick, including Kia Nurse and Sami Whitcomb.

Adding to the Sky’s depth at the small forward position is restricted free agent Michaela Onyenwere, who Pagliocca re-signed to a one-year deal, a source confirmed to the Sun-Times. The 2021 Rookie of the Year averaged 6.6 points off the bench last year for the Sky.

The Sky currently have between three and four roster positions to fill after their initial free agency moves. Restricted free agent Dana Evans’ future is still undetermined. Pagliocca extended a qualifying offer to Evans in January, giving the Sky the right of first refusal.
