Skokie water main break sparks boil order, icy conditions and road closures

A boil order was in effect Friday morning after a water main break has caused road closures and icy conditions in suburban Skokie.

The water main break happened around 5:15 a.m. this morning at East Prairie Road and Emerson Street, according to village officials.

A road closure has been implemented at McCormick from Dempster to Golf and East Prairie from Church to Golf due to water main break, authorities said.

The boil order was issued hours after the main break.

Village officials urged residents to avoid non-essential tap water use and boil all water for five minutes or before drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Residents can also use bottled water as a substitute.

Some Skokie residents reported low water pressure or no water supply, officials said.

Crews were working to repair the issues and residents were urged to avoid the area.
