WWE icon Shawn Michaels finally gave a public comment on Bret Hart’s accusation of him sleeping with boss Vince McMahon during the 1990s. Hart made the comment a few months ago stating that he felt the two were romantically involved when looking back at how much McMahon did for Michaels. The former rivals have made peace from their previous drama, but Hart showed there’s still some hostility there.
Michaels shared the following about his feelings on Bret’s comment:
“It wasn’t long after that, that I hear about whatever, doing things with Vince. Which you go like, ‘Ah, what are you gonna do.’ Never happened. But you know, it’s the wrestling business. I’m never sure what’s out there to get a rise out of people or to make things — it’s the wrestling business, and I don’t put a lot of stock in that.
It sounds silly, I guess. But — because good news is not clickworthy and bingeworthy. But you know, I live a positive, joyful life. It’s boring as hell to some people, but I’d just rather do that than the other.”
Michaels tried to take the high road by claiming that he tried not to think too much about a false story. The claim was shut down by Michaels flat out saying it never happened, despite Hart’s quote taking off in popularity.
Why Bret Hart Made Controversial Accusation
The 1990s featured Michaels having a lot of backstage power in a strange manner. McMahon allowed Michaels to get away with many unprofessional actions in the locker room and in the ring due to believing in the wrestler’s star power.
Michaels refused to lose matches, had questionable retirements, and often butted heads with other top stars. The Undertaker allegedly once threatened Michaels over fearing he’d refuse to drop the WWE Championship to Steve Austin, like with other past incidents.
All these controversial moments and McMahon treating Michaels like other wrestlers made many question the relationship. Hart likely wanted to have some fun at the expense of Vince and Shawn by referencing this story today. McMahon clearly had a bias and attachment to Michaels as a talent, but nothing romantic ever came out about these two.
Is There Still Bad Blood Between Bret & Shawn?
Hart and Michaels had arguably the most intense backstage rivalry between two top WWE stars hating each other. Both men were competing for the top spot during the 1990s’ New Generation Era and had hostile moments against each other.
The two eventually made peace when Hart returned to WWE in 2010 for the first time in 13 years after he left for WCW. Michaels and Hart got along well and even rekindled some of their old friendship when working together more. However, Bret getting asked about past issues led to the drama being in the spotlight again.
Michaels’ comments made it clear that he has no problem with Hart and doesn’t understand where the comment came from. The two will likely get along any time they meet in person since there’s no more competition there. However, past tension sees their previous moments brought up when discussing the past.
