The Seattle Seahawks ownership bid story remains in its early stages, but a new twist arrives in the tale. Aditya Mittal, an investor in the Boston Celtics, and Wys Groubeck, former head owner of the Celtics, prepare an ownership bid to purchase the Seattle Seahawks. They reside as the only two names on the letter of intent sent to the Allen & Company, who handle the sale of the Seahawks.
Mittal currently works as the CEO of ArcelorMittal, a steel company that operates out of Luxembourg. His father, Lakshmi, founded the company, and their family ranks as one of the wealthiest families in India. Mittal sent $1 billion as a contribution to the Celtics ownership bid, led by Bill Chisholm.
Grousbeck, created the ownership group that purchased the Celtics in 2002. He remains with the organization until 2028 to oversee the transition. Because Mittal lives in London, Grousbeck plans to live in Seattle to manage the team.
Seattle Seahawks Ownership Bid Adds Championship Experience
GettyGrousbeck witnessed two titles with the Boston Celtics under his ownership.
Given Grousbeck saw success with the Boston Celtics as owner, this ownership bid should comfort Seattle Seahawks fans. The Celtics won two titles, 2008 and 2024, under his ownership plus won their conference an additional two times just to make the NBA Finals.
Another satisfying factor, the ownership of the Celtics largely lets the front office and coaching staff operate within their means. Fans should not expect either Grousbeck or Mittal meddling with the affairs of the front office.
However, when the Grousbeck family began the sale of the Celtics, reporting indicated that the rising NBA luxury tax forced them to sell the team. Despite the report, Grousbeck heavily denied those reports.
He said, ““The Grousbeck family is selling the team for estate and family planning considerations. To say the sale is in any way related to losses is completely incorrect. There has not been a capital call from ownership, or any additional investment of any kind, in the 22 years since Boston Basketball Partners bought the team, and we don’t anticipate there being one.”
The Grousbeck family, including Wyc’s father Irv, bought the Celtics for $360 million in 2002.
The Current State of the Seattle Seahawks Sale
GettyJody Allen operated as a steward for the Seattle Seahawks after Paul Allen’s death.
Recently, reports arose that Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook sought to place ownership bids for the Seattle Seahawks. However, they declined the reports of their interest. Beyond them, the reports of other potential suitors are not publicly known.
Jody Allen took over the Seattle Seahawks after the death of Paul Allen in 2018. It stated in Paul’s will that he wished the Seahawks to be sold and the proceeds donated to charitable endeavors. Under Jody’s oversight, she allowed John Schneider to operate as usual, helping lead the team to its second Super Bowl title in franchise history.
Regardless who ends up purchasing the Seattle Seahawks, it will mark a changing of the guard. The Allen family means a great deal to the Seattle community, so hopefully the next ownership group will at least replicate that benefit to the Seattle area.
