The Seattle Seahawks are moving on from a defender less than one week after signing the linebacker during training camp. Seattle made the move to create an additional roster spot for linebacker Power Echols.
The Seahawks announced that the team has moved on from linebacker Joseph Vaughn. Seattle signed the defender on August 1.
Prior to joining the Seahawks, Vaughn signed a futures deal with the Indianapolis Colts before being released in April. The 6-foot-3, 238-pound defender is suddenly looking for a new home.
Vaughn played collegiately for UCLA and Yale.

Seahawks Star DeMarcus Lawrence Had Change of Heart on Retirement
Fresh off a Super Bowl victory, all eyes are on the Seahawks, especially with the HBO “Hard Knocks” series giving fans an inside look at life in the Pacific Northwest. Seahawks star pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence revealed that he was close to retiring after the Super Bowl but ultimately had a change of heart.
“I kind of had my mind made up that if I won, I was done,” Lawrence explained, per Seahawks.com’s Ari Horton.
“But I kind of had a bittersweet feeling in my heart, understanding that with the type of team that we have, we should have been where we were last year. This is where the hard part begins and staying on the top.”
The Seahawks & Devon Witherspoon Have Yet to Agree on New Contract Extension
The Seahawks defense still has plenty of work to do amid training camp despite being one of the top NFL units last season. Seattle’s defense looks to be a bit behind the team’s offense, at least in the footage from the initial “Hard Knocks” episode.
One story to continue watching is the contract status of lockdown cornerback Devon Witherspoon. The star and the Seahawks have been unable to reach an agreement on a new deal.
Witherspoon is entering the final season of a four-year, $31.8 million rookie contract. The Seahawks have already picked up the defender’s fifth-year option for 2027, but both parties are working towards a contract extension.
“Trent McDuffie reset the cornerback market in March after the Kansas City Chiefs traded him to the Los Angeles Rams,” The Athletic’s Daniel Popper wrote in a July 28, story titled, “The NFL’s 10 most interesting contract situations as teams begin training camp.”
“That deal pays McDuffie $31 million in average annual value, according to Over the Cap. Witherspoon should be looking to top that mark. He is versatile and one of the best cornerbacks in football.”
Ex-Cowboys Pass Rusher Dante Fowler Jr. Is Expected to Play Role With Seahawks
One notable addition to Seattle’s defense this offseason is former Dallas Cowboys pass rusher Dante Fowler Jr. The veteran’s relationship with Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde was a major factor in Fowler’s decision to sign with Seattle.
“I just respect the man he is,” Fowler said of Durde, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson. “He got it out the mud. He got it out the hard way. He’s from London. He’s not from here, and his IQ of football is just impressive.
“I love his passion, his intent of the game, the way he coaches his players, that’s what I like the most. He demands something out of his players. He’s not just telling them the X’s and O’s. He’s going to demand it out of you.”
