The Seattle Seahawks made the team’s first major move on defense since NFL free agency kicked off. Former Dallas Cowboys star pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence is headed to the Pacific Northwest.
“Four-time Pro Bowl DE DeMarcus Lawrence is signing a three-year deal worth up to $42 million with the Seahawks, his agents @davidcanter and @nessmugrabi of @aurasportsgroup tell The Insiders,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero detailed in a series of March 12, 2025, messages on X. “He gets $18M guaranteed. Lawrence, who turns 33 next month, had 61.5 career sacks over 11 seasons in Dallas but played just four games last season. Now, a fresh start in Seattle.”
Lawrence gives head coach Mike Macdonald another chess piece to utilize on the defensive line to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. It is a notable move given the Seahawks released Dre’Mont Jones as one of the franchise’s cap casualties.
Seahawks News: Ex-Cowboys Star DeMarcus Lawrence Signed a 3-Year, $42 Million Contract
Financially, the Seahawks are using some of the team’s newly found cap space, but Lawrence’s deal is less than some of the star’s previous monster contracts. Lawrence was once on a five-year, $105 million contract with the Cowboys through 2023. Most recently, Lawrence inked a three-year, $40 million deal with Dallas.
Lawrence signed a similar three-year, $42 million deal with the Seahawks, but the key word is “up to $42 million.” Only $18 million of Lawrence’s contract is guaranteed.
DeMarcus Lawrence Reunites With Seahawks DC Aden Durde
The four-time Pro Bowler only played in four games in 2024. Lawrence posted 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, eight quarterback hits and four sacks in 17 starts during the 2023 season, earning his fourth Pro Bowl nomination. Seahawks defensive coordinator Aden Durde coached Lawrence in Dallas.
“The DeMarcus Lawrence connection to Seattle? Seahawks DC Aden Durde. Durde was the Cowboys D-Line coach from 2021-2023, Lawrence’s most productive years, and was influential in getting D-Law to Seattle this week,” NFL Network’s Peter Schrager explained on X. “Great addition to Seattle’s young D.
“Lawrence is 32-years-old and played just 4 games last year and still fetches 14 million a year. Tells you the value of a proven pass rusher and what type of leader/locker room guy Lawrence is.”
The Seahawks Also Agreed to Terms With Ex-Saints Receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling
The move pairs the veteran with a group of young Seahawks pass rushers including Boye Mafe, Uchenna Nwosu and Derick Hall. Seattle still faces plenty of question marks on offense, namely at receiver.
Hours before news broke about signing Lawrence, the Seahawks agreed to terms with former New Orleans wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling. The Seahawks are looking to replace the production lost by trading DK Metcalf and releasing Tyler Lockett.
“The Seahawks agreed to a deal with veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a source confirms (@TomPelissero was first),” ESPN’s Brady Henderson reported on March 12. “He’s 30 years old and spent half of ’24 with the Saints, so he’ll reunite with OC Klint Kubiak. A deep threat for a WR corps that still needs a lot of help.”
It would be a surprise if there were not more major receiver moves coming in Seattle as the team looks to support Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
