Rockies Recap: Michael Toglia, Zac Veen homer in 9-3 rout of D-backs

Rockies 9, Diamondbacks 3

Saturday at Salt River Fields

On the mound: Right-hander Gabriel Hughes, who missed last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, pitched two scoreless, hitless innings, allowing one walk. Manager Bud Black liked “the life” on Hughes’ fastball and his overall pitch command. … Reliever Zach Agnos, a right-hander the Rockies like a lot, pitched a scoreless sixth. … All told, Colorado pitchers limited the D-backs to three hits.

At the plate: First baseman Michael Toglia, who envisions the Rockies’ core of young players evolving into the next Blake Street Bombers, hit a three-run, opposite-field homer to left-center in the fifth. … No. 3 prospect Zac Veen, trying to earn a roster spot after two injury-plagued seasons, started in left field and hit a two-run homer in the fourth. Veen also stole second base in the second. … Utility infielder Owen Miller went 2 for 2 and drove in a run.

Prospect watch: Speedy outfielder Cole Carrig, just 22, hit 1 for 2 with a two-run double. He hasn’t received as much attention as the power-hitting outfield prospects, but the Rockies like his defense and strong arm.
