Rockies Recap: Austin Gomber returns to the mound with mixed results

On the mound: Lefty Kyle Freeland, pegged as Colorado’s opening day start at Tampa Bay on Friday, had mixed results in his final Cactus League start. Freeland pitched five innings, getting tagged for three runs on five hits, including a homer. The lefty notched eight strikeouts and didn’t walk any. He finished his spring with a 6.16 ERA.    

At the plate: Outfielder Jordan Beck is coming on strong as spring winds down. He hit his fourth homer in a 1-for-3 day and drove in three runs.

Saturday at Sloan Park

On the mound: Left-hander Austin Gomber, pitching his first Cactus League game since being shut down because of a sore shoulder, gave up three runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings. Gomber struck out two and surrendered two homers. … Right-hander Bradley Blalock, one of Colorado’s best pitchers this spring, pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Blalock has a 1.08 ERA.

At the plate: Hunter Goodman, Sam Hilliard and Michael Toglia all homered for Colorado. Goodman, who’s earned a spot on the roster as a catcher, went 2 for 4 and is hitting .463 with a 1.316 OPS.
