Rockets ‘Expected’ to Make Massive Amen Thompson Decision After Lakers Loss

A young Houston Rockets team did it again. They came up short in the NBA Playoffs, despite being viewed as favorites in their series.

Going into the summer, the Rockets’ front office has a lot of work to do. There will be plenty of heavy decisions to make, and one of them revolves around the future of the homegrown standout, Amen Thompson.

According to The Athletic’s Will Guillory and Sam Amick, Thompson is “expected” to sign this summer. While the details of his upcoming deal aren’t finalized, all signs are pointing to a massive payday.

“Bringing back Eason could potentially put the Rockets in a position to have five players on next year’s salary cap making north of $20 million and eight earning at least $10 million annually. That doesn’t even include the lucrative extension young star Amen Thompson is expected to sign this summer, potentially a five-year deal worth more than $250 million.” via The Athletic

Thompson, 23, entered the NBA in 2023. Coming from the Overtime Elite program, Thompson was one of a few prospects to gain top-five recognition, despite skipping the NCAA path to the league.

The Rockets selected Thompson with the fourth-overall pick. Investing a high-end pick in him, the Rockets featured Thompson right away. His defense already looked elite, and his offense showed a lot of promise.

By Thompson’s sophomore effort, the Rockets were playoff contenders. In year two, Thompson posted averages of 14.1 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. He started 42 out of 69 games.

During the 2025-2026 run, Thompson started all 79 games he played He averaged a career-high 37.4 minutes per game, which resulted in career-highs in scoring and passing (18.3 points and 5.3 assists). He also came down with 7.8 rebounds per game.

The Rockets’ 2026 playoff run ended in disappointing fashion. They were the lower seed, but started the series as the favorite. The Los Angeles Lakers knocked out the Rockets in six games.

Some players are entering the offseason unsure about their future with the Rockets. Based on early reporting, it seems that Thompson is on pace to get a long-term investment from Houston. If not, he’ll play the 2026-2027 season on a $12.2 million deal, with a restricted free agency run in 2027.
