A $30,000 gold necklace caused a wild shootout where nearly 60 shots were fired and a self-proclaimed rapper was shot last week at O’Hare Airport, according to police reports.
When passengers from a Spirit Airlines flight from Houston made their way down an escalator to baggage claim around 12:55 a.m. Wednesday, one of them, a 27-year-old South Side man, spotted a 25-year-old self-proclaimed rapper who was later shot, following him.
The 27-year-old, carrying a backpack which contained the white gold necklace and $1,000, also noticed half a dozen or more males exiting a van outside and then walking towards the lower level, where he was also heading, according to a police report and sources.
Once downstairs the 27-year-old was “jumped” by several masked males and he was hit in the head and chest area after a quarrel between two self-proclaimed rappers erupted, apparently over the backpack.
“When the offenders saw that he was not going to just give up and give them the bag, someone said: ‘Go get the pipe,'” the report said.
Occupants in a “gun car” then jumped out and began firing an AK-47-type rifle and a 9mm gun at people on the sidewalk, a police source said.
“Multiple male offenders began to open fire at each other,’’ according to the police report, which showed evidence technicians recovered 57 shell casings.
The 25-year-old West Side man was shot twice in his legs and taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where his condition had stabilized, Chicago police said.
The men took the backpack from the 27-year-old and fled in a black van, officials said.
When the Sun-Times attempted to reach the 27-year-old, a woman who identified herself as his mother told a reporter he was “still shaken up” from the attack.
No one was in custody as of Monday.
