Review: FKA Twigs blends performance art and concert in emotional show at Wintrust Arena

From the elite athleticism on display to the bold and revealing outfits confidently worn by her dancers, FKA Twigs’ current “Body High” tour is aptly named. But it goes beyond the physical form for the British singer-songwriter, who has endured the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in her 15-year career.

“Over the past couple of years, I found myself so ‘body low,’ and it’s taken me a lot of time and healing to feel ‘body high,’ and I wanted to create something that … could inspire us, me, everyone on stage, all of you just to fulfill our dreams,” she told the audience at Wintrust Arena Thursday night.

The body is a major theme of her show. Part of the tour tells a story of how she’s been recovering from the pain her body endured in more ways than one. In 2017, she underwent surgery to remove six large fibroid tumors from her uterus. She also alleged in a lawsuit filed in 2020 that former partner Shia LaBeouf abused her physically, emotionally and mentally during their relationship in 2018-19. The two settled the suit in 2025, but Twigs is still embroiled in a bitter legal battle with LaBeouf, accusing him of trying to silence her with a nondisclosure agreement, according to a new suit filed last week. Amid the turmoil, she also won her first Grammy this year for her album “Eusexua,” and she’s been selling arenas like Madison Square Garden on her current tour.

Chicago was one of two cities on her brief “Eusexua” tour last year, and the show, while compelling, was marred by production mishaps, not to mention derailed by visa issues that required rescheduling her North American dates. “Body High” took the highlights from that tour — Twigs’ deft performance on the pole, compelling stage performances and intricate and sensual choreography by Mike Tyus and Luca Renzi — and elevated it.

From the moment she arrived on stage Thursday night, lying on a bed-like platform covered in white sheets as she sang “Mirrored Heart,” Twigs firmly showed last year’s tour issues were behind her. Throughout the course of five acts, Twigs brought the audience to various worlds through her music and ballroom-influenced set design, an ode to the culture, with an entertaining host leading the way.

While the tour is in support of her 2025 offering, “Eusexua Afterglow,” the evening’s set list was a two-hour multigenre celebration, honoring her hits, sleepers and deep cuts from just about every project she’s released. The steamy “Figure 8,” from the 2015 EP “M3LL155X,” was a treat she pulled out early into the show. During the hip-hop-inspired portion, she even performed her contributions to 645AR’s “Sum Bout You,” which was a pleasant surprise.

While the Chicago stop didn’t have as much guest firepower as other shows on the tour, the stage presence of Twigs’ longtime dancer ensemble, many of whom she grew up with in London, more than made up for it. Dancer/teacher/choreographer James Vu Anh Pham shared blistering chemistry with Twigs on stage, while he also played clarinet and later the keys. The “Sticky” duet was a touching moment between her and another dancer who beautifully sang with her and played guitar.

Twigs’ soaring performance on the poles — one on the far left of the stage with the other one on the opposite side — showcased the decades of dance training she received since she was a child. What’s often underestimated is the physical strength, stamina and precision it takes to move around the poles safely, and twice during the show she masterfully demonstrated her dexterity on the towering poles, twisting and twirling in sync to the music.

Draped in feathers, Twigs reemerged one final time with her dancers to close out the show with “Cellophane,” from her 2019 album “Magdalene.” As artificial snow came down behind her, she delivered one of her most emotional performances of the song. The room was so quiet, you could hear a phone drop.

“But I … just want to feel you’re there,” she tearfully whispered in a heart-wrenching, poignant moment. As the crowd silently wept alongside her, they were right there with her.

The “Body Tour” is a grand celebration of all her hard work and accomplishments amid the hardships she overcame to get to this point. For her, the dancers and crew she’s worked with for years, her tour showcases her as an artist reclaiming her voice and her body.
