Red Wings Trade Pitch Lands Former Canucks Forward

The Detroit Red Wings picked up a solid 4-2 win over the Nashville Predators on March 2. With it, they now have 35-20-6 record and are third in the Atlantic Division standings with 76 points.

With the Red Wings being in a good spot in the standings at this point in the season, they are setting themselves up to be buyers ahead of the 2026 NHL trade deadline. The Red Wings have finally taken a big step in the right direction this season and should get back into the playoffs for the first time since 2016 because of it.

The Red Wings should be looking to address multiple trade needs leading up to the deadline as well. They are undoubtedly in a good position to do so, as they have just under $60 million of deadline cap space.

One specific need that the Red Wings should aim to address is bringing in another gritty top-nine winger who can score. The San Jose Sharks have a fascinating option in former Vancouver Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood. While the 30-year-old forward was acquired by San Jose just back in January, he has found himself right back in the rumor mill.

Due to this, Heavy Sports has a trade pitch that would have the Red Wings acquire Sherwood from the Sharks in a major swap.

Sharks Are Open to Trading Kiefer Sherwood

Back in January, the Sharks made a big move when they acquired Sherwood from the Canucks. They made the move to not only try to help their odds of getting into the playoffs, but also hoped to sign Sherwood to a contract extension.

Yet, with the 2026 NHL trade deadline right around the corner, Sherwood still does not have a contract extension with San Jose. Furthermore, the Sharks are currently four points behind the Edmonton Oilers for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference. With this, Sherwood has now once again entered the rumor mill as a trade candidate.

According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Sharks are open to moving Sherwood ahead of the deadline if they do not come to terms on a contract extension.

“A league source told me this week that the Sharks are open to the possibility of flipping Sherwood if they can’t get him signed. Given his low cap hit ($1.5 million), there should be a robust market for him as a rental player,” LeBrun wrote.

With the Sharks not being against the prospect of moving Sherwood, the Red Wings would be wise to pursue him. He would have the potential to be a strong addition to their roster as they look to cement themselves as true contenders.

Sherwood Would Give Red Wings’ Forward Group Strong Boost

If the Red Wings landed Sherwood, he would be an excellent fit in their top nine. This is because he can play both wings, contributes well offensively, and is a hitting machine. He would also give the Red Wings another option for both their power play and penalty kill if acquired.

Sherwood is also in the middle of a strong 2025-26 season. The 6-foot forward has recorded 17 goals, six assists, 23 points, and 233 hits in 48 games. With numbers like these, he would be a very good pickup for the Red Wings, and it will be interesting to see if they land him from here.
