Red Sox Tabbed to Trade Jarren Duran For 100 mph Pitching Prospect

Trade speculation around Jarren Duran is intensifying for the Red Sox, with a 100 mph pitching prospect potentially involved in return. Why? Because the Boston Red Sox have a long list of problems 16 games into the 2026 season. That’s why they’re off to a painful 6-11 start after Tuesday night’s dismal 6-0 loss in Minnesota against the Twins. But none of the Red Sox problems are as glaring, and at the same time as easily solved, as the outfield logjam.

The problem comes down to this — the Red Sox have five outfielders. Even rotating one through the designated hitter spot on a daily basis, that means one outfielder must sit each day. That is exactly how the Red Sox season so far has played out, with manager Alex Cora struggling to find regular playing time for Roman Anthony, Gold Glovers Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida and of course, Duran. So far, Anthony has taken the DH role eight times, Yoshida four times and Duran three.

To resolve the situation, one of those five will likely need to be traded. According to MLB analyst Christopher Kline, writing on Monday for FanSided, the obvious candidate is Duran.

6-Year Veteran Duran Off to Slow Start

Duran, with just 10 hits in 51 at-bats and a .607 OPS heading into Tuesday’s game, has the weakest offensive start of the outfield quintet. The inconsistency may be the result of his sporadic playing time. Over the past two seasons, Duran has missed a total of only five games. But his numbers are not the main reason the 6-year veteran makes the most obvious trade candidate.

“We know what the 29-year-old left-hander is capable of,” Kline wrote. “Duran’s blend of power and speed is a rare commodity and should mean Boston can flip him for solid value, especially with two additional years of club control left on his contract.”

Because he did not make his MLB debut until 2021 at age 24, Duran will not reach eligibility for free agency until the 2029 season. Priced at just $7.7 million this year, the 2018 seventh-round draft pick also comes at a bargain.

According to Kline, the Red Sox could find their trade partner for Duran in Cincinnati, with manager Terry Francona’s Reds.

“In Cincinnati, meanwhile, the Reds are a half game behind Pittsburgh in the NL Central. The rotation, even in its current compromised state, looks strong enough for another wild card push. If Cincinnati can add more firepower to its lineup, Terry Francona’s squad will be cooking with gas,” Kline wrote. “Duran would provide an immediate upgrade in either corner outfield spot, giving the Reds another top-of-the-order bat in front of Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart. This feels right.”

Top Pitching Prospect as Return For Duran

Who would the Reds send back in return for Duran? Earlier rumors linked Duran to a trade for left-hander Nick Lodolo, a 2016 first-round draft pick who has battled health issues throughout his career. And in fact, Lodolo is on the injured list now with a recurring blister.

Reds ace Hunter Greene is also off the table with an injury. But the Red Sox could opt instead for a top pitching prospect, one who may even be ready to step into the major leagues.

For the Reds, that prospect would be 2021 first-round pick Chase Petty, who was clocked at 100 mph as a high school prospect. Petty is still only 23 years old, and stands as the top-ranked pitcher in the Reds system, No. 7 overall, according to MLB Pipeline.

Petty has struggled over the past couple of years, but, according to a Pipeline scouting report, “given his age — he’ll pitch the 2026 season at age 23 — and athleticism on the mound, the Reds are optimistic Petty will find his way back.”

The scouting report says that Petty still has a “mid-rotation ceiling,” which at this point could make him a solid return in exchange for Duran, and relieving the daily pressure caused by the Red Sox outfield logjam.
