Red Sox Rookie Pitcher Drops Emotional Quote After MLB Debut

The Boston Red Sox beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-0 on Wednesday at Fenway Park. Sonny Gray delivered 6⅓ scoreless innings. The offense did enough. Boston won consecutive games for the first time this season and took the series from one of the best teams in the National League.

In the eighth inning, a 27-year-old left-hander jogged in from the bullpen to make his Major League debut. He had found out he was being called up just hours before the game, and took the mound at Fenway Park for the first time with a message stitched into his glove.

Tyler Samaniego struck out the side in impressive style. After the game, he explained who he was pitching for.

Samaniego Pitches for His Father

Samaniego’s glove carried the words “Rip, Pops” on its side. His father died in 2022 at age 65. Baseball was something his father brought into his life.

“I was thinking about my Dad,” Samaniego told MLB.com. “I know he was out there with me. It was awesome.”

When asked how his Dad might have reacted to the debut, Samaniego laughed and said the answer was not suitable for broadcast. He said his father would have been fired up and ready to celebrate in his own way.

The emotion was real. So was the performance. No Red Sox pitcher had struck out three batters for their first three career outs in a debut since Don Aase did it in 1977. That is 49 years between entries on that list.

The Call-Up Happened Fast

Samaniego’s day started with a noon game on the schedule for Worcester. By mid-morning, plans had changed entirely. He packed his locker, drove to Fenway, and was in a big league uniform before the afternoon first pitch.

He had posted a 3.38 ERA across 5⅓ innings in Triple-A before the promotion. The Red Sox acquired him from the Pittsburgh Pirates this past offseason. Samaniego was originally a 15th-round pick by the Pirates in the 2021 draft out of the University of South Alabama.

The trade to Boston gave him a fresh start. Four hours of notice gave him a debut.

What It Means for the Red Sox

The Red Sox bullpen needed the lift. Boston’s rotation has carried the load when the starters go deep, but the relief corps has been leaned on heavily during a stretch of short outings from the back end of the rotation. Adding a left-hander who can miss bats provides another option as the season progresses.

Samaniego’s debut came in a game that already felt like a turning point. Gray’s dominance on the mound, the first back-to-back wins of the year, and a series victory over Milwaukee gave Boston some momentum heading into a six-game road trip starting Friday in St. Louis.

Manager Alex Cora said this week that the Red Sox will be fine if they continue to pitch. Samaniego’s first outing suggested he might be part of the answer.

Final Word for the Red Sox

Four hours between finding out and taking the mound. A glove with his father’s memory stitched into the leather. Three strikeouts in his first three outs as a Major Leaguer.

Samaniego did not have time to let the moment get too big. Maybe that helped. He arrived, he competed, and he delivered something that had not been done in a Red Sox uniform in nearly half a century.

His Dad would have been fired up. Everyone at Fenway was too.
