The Boston Red Sox entered Spring Training knowing that they were going to have some tough decisions to make regarding their Opening Day roster for the 2026 campaign. And after several of their players starred during the 2026 World Baseball Classic, it’s safe to say those decisions haven’t exactly gotten any easier.
With the regular season less than a week away, the Sox have a logjam of outfielders on their roster right now. One guy who has found himself on the outside looking in at this spot is Kristian Campbell, who is attempting to find his way after a disappointing 2025 campaign. Campbell always faced long odds when it came to making the team right out of Spring Training, and sure enough, the team made a tough decision on his status Saturday morning.
Red Sox Option Kristian Campbell to the Minors
Last year, Campbell entered the season with quite a bit of hype surrounding him. As part of Boston’s “big three” prospects alongside Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer, Campbell tore it up in Spring Training and ended up earning himself the team’s starting job at second base. After a hot start, though, Campbell came crashing back down to earth, leading to his demotion back to the minors in June.
Ever since then, Campbell has been fighting to get his career back on track, but with the team opting to shift him back to the outfield, his chances of cracking the Opening Day roster were always going to be slim. Beyond that, he didn’t play particularly well during Spring Training, as he hit just .220 with one home run and four RBIs in 41 at-bats.
At just 23 years old, Campbell still has time to find his way, but he looks like a shell of the player who was tearing it up just a year ago. With Boston having a plethora of options available in the outfield, it simply doesn’t need Campbell right now, so it is going to send him back to the minors so that he can continue to develop for the time being.

Red Sox Still Hoping Kristian Campbell Can Figure Things Out

Campbell has always been viewed as a hit-or-miss prospect for the Red Sox. His swing is very unique, and while he has had great results in the minors, pitchers in the majors have had answers for him to this point. There’s still time for him to find his way, but it’s beginning to become a question of whether or not there will ever be a spot available for him in the majors with the Sox.
Injuries will certainly happen, but Boston has so much depth in the outfield that it’s tough to see where Campbell fits into the picture for the time being. As a result, letting him continue to figure things out in the minors is likely the best-case scenario for everyone involved currently. And who knows, if he gets hot over the next few months, he could find his way back to the majors at some point later on this season.
