It looked like more trouble at a key position for the Baltimore Ravens when an “ascending” player was helped off the field at training camp on Thursday, August 6, but head coach Jesse Minter soon dropped an injury update that’s actually positive for a “very thin” spot already missing more than one dominant veteran.
Options have been lacking along the interior of the defensive line, so the last thing the Ravens wanted to see was nose tackle C.J. Okoye leaving “practice early with a member of athletic training staff holding his helmet,” per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.
The latter pointed out how senior D-tackles John Jenkins, and All-Pro duo Calais Campbell and Nnamdi Madubuike are “not taking team reps,” while Zrebiec also noted nose tackle Travis Jones and interior lineman Aeneas Peebles were “not practicing.”
Fortunately, Minter explained to reporters after the session Okoye was withdrawn to help him in “dealing with the heat. I would say this, like, the accumulation of reps that he’s endured because of some of our other things on the D-line, something like that pops up, you want to catch it on the front end, so it doesn’t become something where you’re missing a bunch of time, so I thought it was smart to get him out of there.”
It sounds like Okoye will be okay after this sensible precautionary measure. That’s good news, not only for the Ravens and their shortages at the heart of the front seven, but also for a raw and intriguing talent who still has a lot to prove at camp.
C.J. Okoye Under Pressure to Live Up to Early Hype
Okoye was described by Ravens.com Editorial Director Ryan Mink during the 2025 preseason as “an ascending player.” It was high praise for somebody from the NFL’s International Pathway Program who only started playing football in 2022.
The 6-foot-6, 365-pounder has the kind of massive frame the Ravens have traditionally employed in the middle of their defense, but Okoye still fought roster bubble status.
He didn’t survive roster cuts, but Okoye was able to eventually nail down a roster spot by appearing in 13 games after a brief stint on the practice squad. While he tested the Ravens’ patience with some of his performances, Okoye still offers the potential to be a force up front after reuniting with Minter.

The latter was defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024, a year Okoye spent locked on the practice squad for the Bolts. He’s getting ample chances to show Minter he deserves more exposure this season.
Minter and new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver don’t have a lot of choice when they’re without so many key figures up front.
Ravens Still Waiting for Defensive Tackle Reinforcements
The proven game-wreckers are already on the depth chart, but the Ravens must wait for their key defensive tackles to be fully available. Ageing nose guard Jenkins, who’s the most natural challenger to Okoye, is dealing with injury, but the 37-year-old has at least been activated off the PUP list.
Jenkins’ updated status followed an even more encouraging report about Madubuike. The two-time Pro Bowler’s recovery from a serious neck problem is trending in the right direction, following his own activation for camp.
Madubuike’s return is key because he’s the true game-wrecker up front. He’s the ideal dynamic partner for starter over the ball Jones, who has his own spot on the PUP list while he’s dealing with a pectoral problem.

Jones’ absence remains a blow because he’s rated as one of the best at his position in the league. A lineman whose “foremost work is stuffing the run,” according Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus.
Minter knows his defense needs another Jones-type presence, so that’s why the Ravens have given Okoye a long look. Yet his workload must be managed at a position that will be one of the strongest on the team once the established reinforcements arrive.
