Prep roundup: Valley Christian stuns No. 1 St. Francis on senior night in San Jose, No. 3 M-A shuts out Aragon

GIRLS SOCCER

Valley Christian 1, No. 1 St. Francis 0

In a stunning result in San Jose, Valley Christian handed St. Francis (14-2-1, 7-2 WCAL) only its second loss of the season on senior night at home. 

The shocking win brought the Warriors to 10-5-4 overall and 2-5-2 in the West Catholic Athletic League. It was St. Francis’ first loss this season to a team other than No. 2 Archbishop Mitty. 

The Lancers, who lost 1-0 to Mitty on Jan. 16, had just beaten the Monarchs 4-0 in their previous match. 

Junior Maya Patience was virtuous for Valley, scoring the Warriors’ lone goal. Freshman Audrey Pfeiffer had the assist. 

Senior goaltender Natasha Hill recorded seven saves for VC to maintain the clean sheet and pick up the shutout victory.

BOYS SOCCER

No. 3 Menlo-Atherton 1, Aragon 0

M-A (14-0-4, 7-0-2 PAL) didn’t need much scoring to take down Aragon (11-4-2, 6-3) in a high-level clash in the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division. Senior Nathan Thurlow scored the lone goal for the Bears, assisted by fellow senior Yandel Hernandez. Sophomore Torry Franz and Gabriel Hermosillo each took a half in goal for M-A and combined for the shutout. – Christian Babcock

No. 7 Serra 1, Mitty 1

Serra (11-4-3, 7-3-2 WCAL) and Mitty (9-3-6, 5-3-4 WCAL) went toe-to-toe in San Jose, and neither side came out victorious. Samuel Feezor scored the first goal of the game, putting the Monarchs up 1-0 in the first half on an assist from Dylan DeGuzman. But Serra responded in the final frame, with senior Nate Coughlin doing the honors and tying the game. Junior Luca Bertino posted seven saves in net for Serra to keep the contest tied down the stretch. The last time the two teams played, Serra won 5-0 in San Mateo on Jan. 18. – Christian Babcock

  Cities cut red tape to turn unused office buildings into housing

There would be no scoring in this Blossom Valley Athletic League clash on Wednesday night in Campbell. “We definitely outshot them and missed a few good chances,” said Westmont coach Matt Schembri. “Just one of those nights with the weather that it never seemed like the ball was going to go in. I would say we missed two glorious chances. Willow Glen worked very hard and defended really well.” Westmont’s record now stands at 12-4-1 overall and 9-2-1 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League’s Mt. Hamilton Division, good enough for first place. Willow Glen is 8-6-3 and 6-4-1 in the Mt. Hamilton. – Christian Babcock

Oakland Tech 60, Oakland 50

No. 16 Palo Alto 71, Wilcox 52

Palo Alto put together a workmanlike performance to win yet another game on the road in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League’s De Anza Division. Paly won the first quarter 16-12, the second quarter 18-13 and put the game away in the third quarter with a 23-13 advantage. Gavin Haase led Palo Alto with 21 points, including 17 in the third quarter and five 3-pointers. Yousef Iqtish led Wilcox with 20 points and four made 3-pointers. The Vikings are now 19-3 overall and 9-1 in the SCVAL. Wilcox dropped to 12-8 overall and 5-5 in league play. – Christian Babcock

  Myles Garrett Sends 5-Word Message on Future With Browns

The Bulldogs breezed to the conclusion of another unbeaten season in Oakland Athletic League play by spoiling Oakland’s senior night. Jhai Johnson, with her father and NFL quarterback Josh in attendance, scored 16 of her 25 points in the first quarter. Terri’A Russell scored 26 for Tech in a game that was never close. Tyliana Velasquez scored 12 points for Oakland, and Aujaleeyah Lewis put in eight for Oakland. Tech improved to 17-8, 8-0. Oakland fell to 5-14, 2-5. – Joseph Dycus

No. 8 Piedmont 74, Alameda 70

The Highlanders’ precocious freshman Andrea Martin filled the stat sheet once again on Wednesday night, scoring 11 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking three shots as Piedmont won again in West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division play. Freshman guard Jenelle Solis had 21 points and seven assists, while Taylor White and Brianna Webb each scored 11 points. Juliana Johnson led Alameda with 17 points, and Desiree Shoblo and Jennalyn Apodaca both contributed 15 points apiece. Piedmont improved to 20-4, 6-1 and Alameda dropped to 15-10, 3-4. – Joseph Dycus

No. 17 Northgate 42, Mt. Diablo 37

Hana Neuman scored 13 points, and freshman Isabella Lawson chipped in 12 points as Northgate slipped past Mt. Diablo in the first round of the Diablo Athletic League playoffs. Natalie Dance was her normal productive self against a stifling Broncos defense, pouring in 18 points, while wing Nya Fano scored nine. Northgate improved to 21-6, while Mt. Elisa Ortega scored 12 points, and Mahlaysia Atkins and Kylah Isidro each scored exactly 10 as Moreau Catholic improved to 18-7 and a perfect 13-0 in Mission Valley play. Shirina Shi was, as she so often has been this season, American’s leading scorer with 18 points. Freshman Anika Batra scored 13 points against the league’s top team.
