A 35-square-mile area just west of Interstate 5’s Grapevine section is under an evacuation order because of a wildfire.
The Post Fire, which was reported just before 2 p.m. on Saturday, was estimated at 12,265 acres (19 square miles) on Sunday morning, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said. It had burned into the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, which was included in the evacuation zone.
The evacuated area, in red on the map above, is west of the freeway, extending from Gorman to Pyramid Lake. The black line indicates the approximate perimeter as of Sunday morning. Though the fire had burned to up to I-5, the freeway remained open.
The I-5 corridor in Los Angeles County and the Ventura County mountains are under a red-flag warning, indicating heightened wildfire danger, until 5 p.m. Monday because of strong winds and low humidity, the National Weather Service said. Peak wind gusts of 55 mph were forecast for Sunday, increasing to 70 mph overnight.
Post is already California’s second-biggest wildfire of the season, after Corral, which burned 14,168 acres two weeks ago in San Joaquin County.
