Popular Cowboys Coach Could Be Poached by AFC Team

Just when there was a moment of celebration for the Cowboys and their coaching staff in the wake of the hiring of defensive coordinator Christian Parker, a bit of a snap-back to reality: Defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, a popular figure among some of the best players on the defense’s best unit, could be leaving the team.

That comes from a report by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN who said that Whitecotton–who was a candidate for the Dallas job before the hiring of Parker–could reunite with former Jets head coach Robert Saleh, who is taking the reins in Tennessee.

Wrote Fowler on Twitter/X: “Titans requested to interview Cowboys DL coach Aaron Whitecotton for their defensive coordinator opening, per source. Whitecotton also interviewed for the Cowboys DC job and was part of new Titans coach Robert Saleh’s staff in New York. Dallas DL was among tops in QB hits.”

Aaron Whitecotton Has Extensive History With Robert Saleh

Indeed, the defensive line was one of the few aspects of the Cowboys defense that operated as a functioning unit, and Whitecotton deserves credit for that. Whitecotton appeared to be excited about getting back to work with the Cowboys, especially with the front of Osa Odighizuwa, Kenny Clark and his longtime mentee Quinnen Williams, but the hiring of Parker and the promotion of Saleh could well interrupt that notion.

Whitecotton and Saleh are close, as they began working together as far back as in 2014, when Saleh was the linebackers coach in Jacksonville and Whitecotton was the assistant defensive line coach. When Saleh was the 49ers‘ defensive coordinator in 2020, he brought Whitecotton to San Francisco as the assistant defensive line coach.

Saleh left for the Jets the following season, and brought Whitecotton–with a promotion to defensive line coach–to New York for four seasons before Whitecottom landed with the Cowboys.

Cowboys’ Quinnen Williams: ‘I Became an All-Pro’

During his time with the Jets, Whitecotton helped bring along first-round pick Quinnen Williams,  who credited Whitecotton with raising him from a good player to an All-Pro in his fourth season. Ahead of this year’s NFL trade deadline, the Cowboys traded a second-round pick in 2026, a first-rounder in 2027 and Mazi Smith for Williams.

Williams explained how good a coach he thinks Whitecotton is.

“I think anybody can look at the résumé,” Williams said. “Before I had Whitecotton, I kind of was set out to be a good DT. When Whitecotton came into my life as a coach, I became an All-Pro and a Pro Bowler. The techniques that he has taught me, the things that he has done for me in my career when it comes down to coaching and stuff like that, have been unbelievable and kind of transcended my career to this day.”

Still, there was no guarantee that Parker would come in and keep Whitecotton in place. And now, there’s no guarantee that he will be back in Dallas at all in 2026.
