Police issue community alert after series of smash-and-grab robberies

Police issued a community alert after a string of smash-and-grab robberies over the weekend in Norwood Park, Union Ridge, Portage Park, Irving Park, Jefferson Park and Bucktown.

In all eight incidents, two to three men — wearing dark clothing, face masks and gloves — smash the front glass door or a side window of a business and take ATMs and cash drawers, police said. They then flee in a dark-colored or silver sedan.

The robberies occurred at the following times and places:

5300 block of North Cumberland Avenue on Sunday at 4:21 a.m.7000 block of West Higgins Avenue on Sunday at 4:34 a.m.4700 block of North Milwaukee Avenue on Sunday at 4:44 a.m.3400 block of West Irving Park Road on Sunday at 4:50 a.m.5300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue on Monday at 3:05 a.m.5300 block of North Milwaukee Avenue on Monday at 3:07 a.m.4300 block of North Elston Avenue on Monday at 4:04 a.m.2600 block of North Elston Avenue on Monday at 4:27 a.m.

An unrelated smash and grab happened in Lakeview in the 500 block of West Diversey Avenue at 4 a.m. Monday, police said. In that incident, several people broke the window to a grocery store, tied a chain around an ATM and pulled it out with a red SUV and fled.

No one is in custody in any of the above incidents, which are under investigation, police said.
