OAKLAND — Police here have identified two young men who were shot and killed shortly after showing up to a birthday party at a local community event center.
Kelin Sissoko, 19, of Richmond, and Kamel Carpenter, 20, of Berkeley, were shot and killed Jan. 10 at an event center on the 500 block of 55th Street in Oakland, police said. A 29-year-old man from San Pablo was also struck by gunfire but survived.
The three victims arrived at the birthday party, and were shot before they made it inside, authorities said. More than one gunman fired at them at around 10 p.m., and the suspects were gone by the time police got there, authorities said.
Authorities are investigating whether the shooting was related to a rivalry between groups of people in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, but no arrests have been announced yet. Police said that they recovered a gun from the scene but that it wasn’t immediately clear whether it was one used in the shooting.
