Police in San Francisco have detained someone suspected in a multi-vehicle collision Sunday evening that killed one person and sent others to the hospital.
Seven vehicles and eight people were impacted by the collision on Sixth Street, which police said could be related to a hit-and-run incident involving multiple vehicles on northbound Interstate Highway 280 that happened “moments before.”
A spokesperson for California Highway Patrol said that at roughly 6:09 p.m., A black Tesla was involved in a hit-and-run collision involving four cars on Interstate 280. Only minor injuries were reported and no one was transported to the hospital, CHP said.
One of the vehicles involved in the Sixth Street collision between Harrison and Bryant streets was a self-driving Waymo car which was damaged, but its involvement in the crash is not yet known, a spokesperson for the San Francisco Fire Department said.
Emergency responders got the call about the collision around 6:10 p.m. One person and a dog were pronounced dead at the scene, San Francisco Fire said. One person was taken to a trauma center with injuries. The rest received minor injuries or did not require medical attention.
Police have detained a possible suspect driver who is being treated at the hospital, the department said. Detectives are trying to determine if alcohol and/or drugs were factors in the collision.
Debris from the crashes could be seen strewn for half a city block, San Francisco Fire said.
“There was some considerable energy in this collision,” said the Fire Department spokesperson.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie released a statement Sunday night about the collision.“I have been briefed on the multi-vehicle incident that occurred downtown this evening,” he said. “It is a tragedy to lose someone on our streets, and our thoughts are with all those affected and their families. We hope those injured will make a full recovery.”
