Pistons Provide Cade Cunningham Update — As Return Timeline Comes Into Focus

The Detroit Pistons provided a new update on Cade Cunningham as the All-Star guard continues progressing toward a return from a collapsed lung.

The team announced Cunningham “continues to progress in his return-to-play process under the supervision of physicians and Pistons medical and performance staff” and will be re-evaluated in one week.

The update offers cautious optimism — and a clearer timeline — as Detroit approaches the final stretch of the regular season.

Cunningham Makes First Public Appearance Since Injury

Cunningham recently took a visible step forward in his recovery.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the All-Star guard joined the Pistons on the bench in street clothes during their March 31 home game — his first public appearance at a game since suffering a left lung pneumothorax on March 17 against the Washington Wizards.

While he has remained largely out of public view, Cunningham has continued working behind the scenes.

He was spotted at the team’s practice facility on March 25 during a shootaround session, working with trainers in the weight room as part of his recovery process.

Presence Still Felt Inside Locker Room

Despite his absence from games, Cunningham has maintained a consistent presence within the team.

“He’s been around, he’s been vocal and his presence has always been there since he went down,” teammate Jalen Duren said. “I know the fans probably haven’t seen him at a game, but he hasn’t went anywhere.”

Duren added that Cunningham has remained engaged with the team during practices and games, continuing to communicate and support teammates throughout his recovery.

Pistons Continue to Win Without Star Guard

Cunningham’s injury came at a critical point in the season, but Detroit has continued to thrive.

The Pistons recently clinched the Central Division title for the first time since the 2007–08 season following a 127–116 win over the Toronto Raptors.

Detroit holds a 55–21 record and sits atop the Eastern Conference standings, solidifying its status as one of the league’s top teams.

During Cunningham’s absence, Duren has helped stabilize the lineup, stepping into a larger offensive role while maintaining strong production on the boards. He averaged 23.4 points and 10.5 rebounds while leading Detroit to a 6–2 record in Cunningham’s absence.

Return Timeline Becoming Key Factor

Cunningham was initially set to be re-evaluated two weeks after the injury announcement on March 19 — a window that aligns with early April as the regular season winds down.

With six games remaining, timing has become increasingly important.

Cunningham is currently five games short of meeting the league’s end-of-season award eligibility threshold, adding another layer of intrigue to his potential return.

Before the injury, he was averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game, anchoring Detroit’s offense and emerging as an All-NBA-caliber performer.

Cautious Approach Reflects Bigger Picture

The Pistons’ measured timeline reflects a long-term approach.

While Cunningham’s return could further elevate Detroit’s ceiling heading into the postseason, the organization appears focused on ensuring he returns at full strength rather than rushing the process.

For now, the emphasis remains on steady progress.

Outlook Moving Forward

The latest update reinforces both optimism and uncertainty.

Cunningham is progressing and increasingly visible around the team.

But his exact return date remains fluid.

For a Pistons team already proving it can win without him, the next step will be determining when — and how — their star guard reintegrates into a lineup with championship aspirations.
