Phillies Named Surprise Fit for Star Free Agent Slugger

The Philadelphia Phillies may not be done making significant moves just yet. Philadelphia’s biggest deals so far this offseason were to bring back star duo Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto. Team brass also made a run at both Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette, but both players opted to sign with other teams.

Following the failed deals, Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski claimed that he was “content” with his team. The exec even asserted that his club was “in the same neighborhood” as the Los Angeles Dodgers. The reigning World Series champions previously beat Philadelphia in four games in early October.

Dombrowski’s remarks seemingly suggest that the Phillies could be done making moves. Nevertheless, the team’s aggressive pursuit of Bregman and Bichette clearly shows that they want to upgrade their infield. Third base, in particular, is an area of concern for Philadelphia. The club’s current third baseman, Alec Bohm, has been linked with a move away from Philly throughout the offseason.

Bleacher Report is now naming the Phillies as a surprise fit for free agent Eugenio Suarez. Following the completion of other deals, the third baseman is now the premier power hitter remaining on the board. While Philadelphia potentially landing Suarez would be fairly unexpected, the aforementioned outlet claims that the club has to do something in response to missing out on Bregman and Bichette.

Eugenio Suarez’s Chances of Landing with the Philadelphia Phillies Hinge on Bohm’s Future

GettyEugenio Suarez would likely thrive in Philadelphia’s hitter-friendly park.

Any chance of a deal for Suarez is directly contingent on Bohm departing Philadelphia. The Phillies are extremely unlikely to grab the free agent power hitter and keep their current third baseman. The club essentially cannot afford to have both players on its roster. Suarez is likely looking for an annual contract in the $15 million to $20 million range.

While directly taking on this much money could be difficult for Philadelphia, they would be able to make it work if they trade Bohm. The third baseman is scheduled to make $10.2 million in 2026, his final year under contract with the club. Although Bohm is a solid player, team management is obviously looking for better alternatives at the position.

Suarez hit 49 home runs to go along with 118 RBIs and an .824 OPS during 2025. He previously played most of the campaign with the Arizona Diamondbacks before being traded to the Seattle Mariners ahead of the deadline. Although his statistics dropped in Seattle, T-Mobile Park is widely considered a pitcher’s stadium. Suarez is clearly the better hitter compared to Bohm.

Phillies Previously Wanted to Acquire Suarez in 2025

One potential issue with Philadelphia targeting Suarez is that he is not exactly a great fielder. In fact, Bohm, who is also subpar at the hot corner, managed to outperform Suarez in most fielding statistical categories on the season. It remains to be seen if the team is willing to take a defensive hit to have more offense.

Despite this, the Phillies were previously interested in trading for Suarez in 2025. Reports out of Philadelphia even claimed that the club discussed a possible trade with Arizona at the time. Although he ultimately landed in Seattle, Dombrowski clearly rates the slugger. Because Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park is a hitter-friendly stadium, Suarez could easily reach 50 homers in 2026 if he were to join the team.
