Person in custody after allegedly fleeing Near North Side traffic stop

A person is in custody after allegedly fleeing during a traffic stop on the Near North Side. A police officer fired his weapon at the fleeing vehicle, Chicago police said.

Officers were conducting a traffic stop in the 300 block of West Division Street at 6:50 p.m. Sunday related to an earlier call of a person with a gun in the area when the occupants in the car attempted to flee and hit a police vehicle. An officer fired his gun at the vehicle, police said.

One officer was taken to a nearby hospital for observation; no other injuries were reported, police said. The vehicle was later recovered in the 100 block of North Avenue and a person of interest was taken into custody.

The officers involved are being placed on routine 30-day administrative leave, police said. The incident is under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
