Pedestrian killed in Hayward hit-and-run collision

HAYWARD — A 51-year-old man crossing a street Tuesday morning suffered fatal injuries when he was struck by an SUV that failed to remain at the scene, police said.

The man’s name was not immediately released pending notification of his family. Police said he was a Hayward resident.

As of Wednesday morning the driver and vehicle were still being sought, police said.

The collision happened about 6:56 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Hesperian Boulevard and Sueirro Street, an area with a mixture of homes and businesses.

Witnesses found the man in a center median and called police. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel.

Police said the man was struck by what witnesses described as a while, medium-sized SUV that was last seen going southbound on Hesperian Boulevard from Sueirro Street.

A description of the driver was not released by police.

The police investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police traffic bureau at 510-293-7066.

The man’s death is the city’s first fatal traffic collision of the year. There were nine in 2024, police said.
