The Boston Red Sox demolished the Athletics 13-1 on Friday night at Fenway Park. The offense erupted for five runs in the second inning and kept adding from there. The balanced attack featured two hits apiece from six different players. Wilyer Abreu drove in three.
The win was Boston’s ninth in a row. The Red Sox improved to 64-51 and have now won 32 of their last 37 games, the kind of sustained run that has no modern comparison.
But the performance that will be remembered from Friday night belonged to the 23-year-old on the mound. What he did was historic.
Tolle Delivers a Night for the Record Books
Payton Tolle recorded a career-high 14 strikeouts over six dominant innings. He issued zero walks, surrendered just two hits, and needed only 84 pitches to carve through the Athletics’ lineup. Three separate innings ended with Tolle fanning every batter he faced.
The last Red Sox pitcher to strike out that many in a single game was Chris Sale, who reached 17 seven years ago. Before that, the last Red Sox arm under the age of 24 to reach those heights was Roger Clemens in his iconic 20-strikeout performance four decades ago.
“It doesn’t get much better than that,” Tracy said. “He was electric.”
No pitcher in franchise history had ever recorded 14 or more punchouts in an outing that lasted fewer than seven innings. The Fenway crowd recognized the moment, chanting Tolle’s name as he headed to the dugout after his final frame.
“That’s a first for me,” Tolle said. “That was pretty cool. Not going to lie.”

Rogers Compares Tolle to a Cy Young Winner
Jake Rogers made his first start behind the plate as a Red Sox catcher Friday night. He spent last season catching Tarik Skubal’s starts during the left-hander’s first Cy Young Award campaign in Detroit.
After six innings with Tolle, Rogers reached for that experience to describe what he had just witnessed.
“That’s how it felt tonight,” Rogers said. “It was like I could call anything, and they were gonna have weak contact or swing and miss. It felt like he had it tonight.”
The comparison carries weight because of who it comes from. Rogers has been behind the plate for elite pitching at the highest level. For him to put Tolle in that conversation after one start together says something about the quality of stuff the young right-hander possesses.
“I love his mentality,” Rogers said. “He goes up there and throws his stuff over the plate.”

Final Word for the Red Sox
“Good company,” Tolle said. “It means a lot but it’s not the end. Just got to keep going and building off each one.”
Fourteen strikeouts in under seven innings. Nobody has ever done that in a Red Sox uniform before Friday night. The numbers say Tolle is special. The catcher behind the plate confirmed it.
