As the 2026 season inches closer, the New England Patriots and star cornerback Christian Gonzalez still don’t have a contract extension worked out. Now, it appears that the two sides have stagnated in their negotiations.
Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated recently appeared on NBC Sports Boston. There, he shared that contract negotiations between the two sides are in a “holding pattern.”
That’s because Gonzalez is looking to reset the market, but he’s only looking to reset the market after Devon Witherspoon of the Seattle Seahawks has done so. The pair of star cornerbacks are represented by the same agent, and it appears that Witherspoon is first up.
Despite a recent report indicating that Witherspoon and the Seahawks were nearing a deal worth $32 million annually, Breer now says that things are “status quo” in Seattle. Amid that holdup, it appears that there may need to be some compromise in negotiations, which their agent may not want to make.
“My understanding is the agent was looking for market reset-ers on every level for these guys. There’s going to have to be some level of compromise,” Breer added.
As it stands now, Gonzalez is making $4.8 million for the 2026 season. The Patriots also picked up his option for the 2027 season, which will pay him $18.1 million. That’s clearly below market rate, and he likely won’t play both seasons on the deal.
New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft, Christian Gonzalez Opened Up on Negotiations

Normally, negotiations take place behind closed doors. That hasn’t entirely happened with the New England Patriots and Christian Gonzalez, though, as owner Robert Kraft recently shared the team had offered him a deal to make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
“We love Christian Gonzalez,” Kraft said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “We love him as a player, as a person. That’s why we’ve made an offer to him that makes him the highest-paid player ever to play that position in the NFL. And coincidentally, it’s the highest contract in the Patriots franchise history. We’re glad we drafted him and he’s developed here, and we hope he’ll be with us for a long time.”
Many people figured that this was a negotiation tactic. It makes it seem to some that Gonzalez isn’t being entirely reasonable, and could put outside pressure on him.
Naturally, Gonzalez would later be asked about this. He wouldn’t add fuel to the fire, though, instead doing his best to keep things behind closed doors.
“A ton of respect for Mr. Kraft,” Gonzalez said. “Just something we don’t want to handle in the media, keep that with the team and my team.”
Christian Gonzalez, A.J. Brown Get Chippy in Training Camp

For the time being, Christian Gonzalez has been focused on Patriots Training Camp. That, in its own respect, is a good sign. He’s been actively participating at a time when many other players would either sit out to avoid injury amid contract negotiations or simply not show up altogether.
While there, Gonzalez has had a chance to compete against some of the best. That includes A.J. Brown, and on Thursday, there were reports that things got chippy between the two of them.
The pair had been trash talking one another after competing throughout the day. At some point, emotions got hot, and the two reportedly needed to be separated briefly.
Later, Gonzalez noted there was “no disrespect” between them. It was just competition.
“He’s a No. 1 receiver in this league going up against the No. 1 corner,” Gonzalez said. “I mean, that’s how it’s going to go.”
