The Green Bay Packers are more invested in former second-round pick Skyy Moore than many are projecting. Moore signed a one-year deal in free agency and was on the roster bubble for many entering training camp. However, Matt LaFleur talked glowingly about his ability as a receiver and return threat before training camp, and General Manager Brian Gutekunst carried that sentiment into his media availability.
Gutekunst did not say the exact words, but the overall tone was that Moore is a lock to make the roster. The GM also made it clear that they see him getting work as a wide receiver, and not just a return man.

The Packers had Romeo Doubs return punts last year. Meanwhile, Savion Williams and Bo Melton returned kicks for the team. Doubs is gone so the punt returner job was wide open.
However, with a new special teams coordinator in Green Bay, it appears as though Williams and Melton are seeing their chances on kick return fade away as well.
Moore only had 14 punt returns and five kick returns entering the 2025 season. However, he was traded to the San Francisco 49ers before the year, and the team had a new plan for him.
He had 25 punt returns and 33 kick returns for the 49ers in 2025. He averaged 11.6 yards per punt return and 27.5 yards per kick return. While he did not take any returns to the end zone, he did have two returns that put the 49ers on the doorstep of scoring, and they punched it in one play after his return.
He was viewed as one of the best return men in the NFL last year. It was only one year, so there were questions about whether he would keep that reputation. However, early indications from training camp are that the team wants him on both the kick and punt return teams.
Packers Want to Get Receiving Production From Moore
Both LaFleur and Gutekunst made it clear that they do not just view Moore as a return threat, though. That is interesting considering Moore had five catches for 87 yards and two rushes for 11 yards last year.
For his career, he has 48 catches for 581 yards and eight rushes for 58 yards. He has not gone over 100 yards receiving in a season since 2023. So, it could be asking a lot for him to get involved in the offense, especially after he already played for the Kansas City Chiefs and 49ers. If Andy Reid and Kyle Shanahan cannot make the most of Moore, who can?
The Packers seem to think they have a plan. He has legitimate speed and talent to get drafted in the second round. He is clearly good with the ball in his hands. However, the Packers have both Williams and Melton in similar receiver roles.
Williams is only in year two, but Moore is a gadget player in a similar light. Moore could push him for the role. Melton has been switching positions and could be in danger of being passed up by Moore soon.
