Overnight stakeout leads to arrest of man suspected of stealing mail

Law enforcement officials arrested a man suspected of mail theft after an overnight stakeout, the United States Postal Inspection Service said.

Matthew Hutcheson, 33, is accused of burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of fraudulent identification, as well as one misdemeanor count of resisting a police officer, police said.

Hutcheson was arrested the morning of Dec. 24 after Chicago police and U.S. Postal Inspection officers waited for him overnight once he had been identified as a suspect. He’s accused of committing a condominium burglary and mail theft in the 400 block of North Carpenter Street on Aug. 26.

Hutcheson was on pretrial release after being arrested in June on suspicion of possessing fraudulent identification and burglary tools, including five counterfeit USPS postal keys, and missed subsequent trial dates before his arrest, police said.
