One wounded in alleged gunfight with Aurora police on Thanksgiving

A man was injured in a shootout with Aurora police Thursday night while officers were responding to reports of shots fired in an apartment complex parking lot.

Police responded to 911 calls about shots fired in the parking lot north of Mississippi Avenue and Sable Boulevard at 9:25 p.m., according to the Aurora Police Department.

At about 9:50 p.m., officers observed a man near Sable and Kentucky Drive who was holding a gun and matched the description given by witnesses.

Armed man shot twice by Weld County sheriff’s deputy east of Greeley, police say

“After giving this man multiple commands to drop the weapon, the suspect instead fired numerous rounds at the officers,” police wrote in a social media post. “Multiple officers returned fire, striking the suspect.”

Police said six officers were involved in the shooting and have been placed on paid leave. None were injured. The man, whom police did not identify, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

The initial report of shots fired in the parking lot is being investigated by the Aurora Police Department’s Major Crime Homicide Unit. Officers’ decision to shoot is being investigated by the 18th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response team and APD’s Internal Investigations Bureau.

As of 2:10 a.m., police said Sable was closed between Mississippi and Kentucky while the incidents were being investigated.
