One dead, three hospitalized in East Bay head-on crash

BYRON — One person died and three others were injured Thursday night after a head-on collision between two vehicles on a rural road, the California Highway Patrol said.

Authorities did not identify the dead person immediately, pending notification of relatives.

The crash happened about 6:10 p.m. on Vasco Road, just south of Camino Diablo. According to the CHP, a man driving a Honda CRV was going north on Vasco Road when he crossed over the double-yellow divider lines for unknown reasons.

The Honda smashed into a Toyota Prius going south that had three occupants.

One passenger in the Prius died at the scene, the CHP said. The driver of the CRV and Prius and another passenger in the Prius all suffered major injuries and were taken by ambulance to a hospital. It was unclear whether they were expected to survive.

The CHP said it has ruled out drugs and alcohol as possible factors in the collision.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and the CHP is hoping for help from anyone who may have witnessed the crash or seen the cars before the wreck. Anyone with information can contact the CHP’s Contra Costa County office at 320Investigations@chp.ca.gov or by calling 925-646-4980.
