Ole Miss in Talks With Shocking 28-TD Quarterback After CFP Loss

The Ole Miss Rebels and head coach are fresh off of a heartbreaking loss in the College Football Playoff against the Miami Hurricanes.

After an incredibly dramatic playoff run, the Rebels are officially headed into the offseason. Unfortunately, they received some bad news about standout quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who has been denied another year of eligibility by the NCAA.

Keeping that in mind, Ole Miss might need a new starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Golding is reportedly still talking to an extremely surprising option.

According to a January 9 report from CBS Sports insiders Chris Hummer and Matt Zenitz, the Rebels are still talking with former Florida Gators signal caller DJ Lagway. Of course, Lagway recently verbally committed to the Baylor Bears in the transfer portal.

“DJ Lagway has continued to have dialogue with other schools, including Ole Miss, sources tell @mzenitz and I,” Hummer wrote on X. “He did, however, verbally commit to Baylor and informed multiple people he committed to the Bears. He also began recruiting for them. Process is worth monitoring.”

Ole Miss Rebels Are Losing a Lot in Trinidad Chambliss

GettyTrinidad Chambliss’ parents Trent and Cheryl Chambliss have been a major part of the Ole Miss’ quarterback’s journey.

Finding a way to replace Chambliss will be difficult for Golding and company. The Ole Miss quarterback ended the season as one of the top players in college football.

When all was said and done this season, the talented quarterback completed 66.1 percent of his pass attempts for 3,937 yards, 22 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also picked up 527 yards and scored eight more touchdowns on the ground.

There is simply no way to perfectly replace that production.

Chambliss will look to take his talents the NFL barring an unforeseen change. He is 26 years old, which could complicate his value for professional teams. On the flip side, the Rebels need to figure something out under center for next year.

DJ Lagway Could Be a Legitimate Option for Ole Miss

What makes this so surprising is that Lagway had already committed to Baylor. He would not be the first quarterback in the portal to break his verbal commitment and flip to another team.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey had verbally committed to Nebraska. Shortly after that commitment, he decided to flip to Kentucky. Lagway could follow in his footsteps.

Lagway was a five-star recruit when he originally committed to Florida. According to 247 Sports, he was the No. 1 quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class and was ranked as the No. 3 overall player in the nation. With the Gators, he did not live up to that hype.

In his two seasons at Florida, Lagway completed 62 percent of his passes for 4,179 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. He also ran for 237 yards and a touchdown.

Clearly, his turnover numbers were a concern. The Gators as a whole were not very good over the last two years and the blame cannot be placed solely on Lagway. However, he has a lot of work to do to become a top-tier college quarterback.

Landing with a school like Ole Miss would give Lagway great coaching and a huge opportunity to take over as the leader of a College Football Playoff team. Whether or not he will break his verbal commitment to Baylor remains to be seen, but this is a situation worth watching closely.
