Oakland’s own Fantastic Negrito returns with another new release

Oakland blues/soul/R&B singer Fantastic Negrito is set to release a new album.

It’s called “Son of a Broken Man.”

And it’s probably got a really great shot at winning a Grammy Award.

After all, that’s what Fantastic Negrito albums do, right? They win Grammy Awards.

Indeed, the 56-year-old singer — who was born Xavier Dphrepaulezz — won three Grammys in the category of best contemporary blues album for three consecutive releases. Fantastic Negrito first won that category in 2017 with “The Last Days of Oakland” and then he followed up with victories in same competition in 2019 (for “Please Don’t Be Dead”) and 2021 (with “Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?”).

The new album is “Fantastic Negrito’s most personal thus far, exploring family, deception and the human desire to hide the true self as he dives deep into one of the oldest conflicts in human history, the struggle between father and son,” according to a news release.

Due out Oct. 18, “Son of a Broken Man” is available to order via Fantastic Negrito’s own Storefront Records, fantasticnegrito.com.
