Oakland woman charged with sending her 87-year-old mom to the hospital

OAKLAND — A local woman has been charged with assaulting her mother and ultimately sending to the hospital, where the alleged victim reportedly told police the attacks had been going on for years.

Karen Whaley, 64, was charged with elder abuse and battery with serious bodily injury against her 87-year-old mother. The charges stem from an alleged assault that occurred last Jan. 28, but the alleged victim told police that her daughter had been beating her since 2016, authorities said in court records.

Whaley is being held at Santa Rita Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. She has pleaded not guilty and her preliminary hearing has been set for Valentine’s Day, records show.

Police say that on the day of the assault, the 87-year-old woman was covered in bruises and required hospitalization. Whaley allegedly beat her and pulled her out of her bed, knocking her to the floor.

Prosecutors filed the two felony charges on Jan. 31, records show.
