A 78-year-old fisherman was pronounced dead after he was pulled from the water in the Marin Headlands.
The victim was identified as Ho Yu Wong of Oakland, according to the coroner division of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when a surfer spotted an unconscious person in the water at Rodeo Beach and brought him to land, Southern Marin fire Deputy Chief Matt Barnes said.
A bystander performed life saving measures until first responders arrived, Barnes said. The victim was in cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 4:19 p.m., the coroner’s office said.
Investigators learned that Wong was fishing for mussels at the shoreline when he fell into the surf and was swept out into the water.
Rescue crews spent an hour searching for a woman who was reportedly seen in the water, Barnes said. They called off the search after surveillance video footage showed that Wong was the only person who entered the water.
The cause and manner of death are pending based on the investigations by the coroner’s office and the U.S. Park Police.
