North Lawndale mother charged with murder in infant’s death

A North Lawndale woman was ordered held in custody on murder charges Saturday in connection with the death of her 5-month-old son in November.

Tamyra Anderson, 20, is accused of abusing her infant son, Marquis Johnson Jr., who was found unresponsive Nov. 21 in their home in the 1500 block of South Millard Avenue, according to Cook County prosecutors and the medical examiner’s office.

Marquis died Nov. 28 of multiple injuries and child abuse, and his death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office determined. A police report noted the boy suffered head trauma, detached retinas, bruising, an acute brain bleed and cardiac arrest.

Court documents allege Anderson “violently handled” the boy over time and that the boy’s father had witnessed her “shake, throw, roughly handle” him.

Anderson was arrested Thursday at her home. She is charged with two felony counts of murder.

Her next court date is Tuesday.
