Non-Equity Jeff Award nominations for 2025 announced

The 51st Non-Equity Jeff Award nominations were announced Thursday, with Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre topping the list at 22 nods for three productions — the most nominations for any individual theater company.

The awards recognize excellence in non-Equity theater and include shows from companies across the Chicago area, spotlighting 138 theater artists across 23 categories produced by 29 companies.

This year, musicals earned the most nominations, with Kokandy Productions’ “Into the Woods” and Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre’s “The Secret Garden” leading the way with 10 nominations each. Theo Ubique’s productions of “A Little Night Music” earned eight nominations.

Refracted Theatre Company, which led the nominations in 2023 with Tambo & Bones, garnered seven nominations — the most for a non-musical — with 2024’s Coronation, including for Best Production — Play. The show explores a United States 300 years in the future where women still aren’t president, and in the days after the re-election of President Donald Trump, became particularly resonant with local audiences.

City Lit Theatre earned six nominations for its revival of August Wilson’s “Seven Guitars.”

The awards ceremony will be held March 24 at the Harris Theater.
