NFL Personality Rips ‘Soft as Brie Cheese’ Packers in NFC North Verdict

The Green Bay Packers are trying to move past a collapse that ended a promising 2025 season.

Colin Cowherd already sees a problem that could follow them into 2026.

Cowherd took aim at head coach Matt LaFleur and Green Bay’s toughness during the Aug. 7 edition of “The Herd,” questioning whether the Packers have enough edge to survive a loaded NFC North.

“Soft as brie cheese in a town that loves aged cheddar,” via The Herd’s segment shared on X.

The post added that Cowherd believes LaFleur and the Packers “aren’t tough enough to win big” in the division.

It’s pointed reproval for a coach who has won plenty of regular-season games in Green Bay.

LaFleur enters his eighth season with a 76-40-1 record, six playoff appearances and a new multiyear contract.

The question surrounding him has gone toward the up-in-the-air direction.

The Packers know LaFleur can get them into January. But Cowherd and others question whether his teams have the edge to finish once they get there.

LaFleur Criticism Hits After Packers’ Late Collapse

Green Bay gave Cowherd plenty of material during the final weeks of 2025.

The Packers were 9-3-1 before losing their final four regular-season games. Their season ended with a 31-27 wild-card loss to the Chicago Bears after Green Bay led 21-3 at halftime and 27-16 in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Love threw for 323 yards and four touchdowns in the loss, but the offense went through four third-quarter possessions while picking up only one first down.

The late-game problems went past one night.

NFL.com noted when LaFleur signed his extension that the Packers became the first team since the 1970 merger to lose three games in one season, including the playoffs, after holding a lead of at least 10 points in the final five minutes.

Two of those losses came against Chicago.

Injuries deserve a place in the discussion.

Micah Parsons suffered a torn ACL in Week 15, and Green Bay dealt with other significant absences down the stretch.

Still, the way games slipped away can’t out of view.

Packers president Ed Policy did not see it as a reason to move on from LaFleur. Green Bay signed LaFleur, general manager Brian Gutekunst and executive vice president/director of football operations Russ Ball to multiyear extensions in January.

Cowherd Has Taken This Angle on Packers Before

Cowherd’s denunciation also has history behind it.

He made a similar argument in November 2022, saying the Packers had become “softer” under LaFleur and questioning the team’s identity after a loss to Philadelphia.

Up to today, the quarterback has changed and much of the roster has turned over.

But Cowherd is harping on the same issue.

There is also a difference between LaFleur being under pressure and being on the hot seat.

Green Bay gave him a legitimate multiyear commitment less than seven months ago.

Policy said in March that it had “never been clearer” to him that the Packers had the right football leadership in place. He also said he had decided before the playoff game that he wanted LaFleur back.

That puts the focus on what happens on the field.

LaFleur has a 3-6 playoff record, and Green Bay has failed to reach the NFC Championship Game since the 2020 season.

The Packers have also gone one-and-done in each of the past two postseasons.

Cowherd’s cheese line will get the attention, but the actual challenge sits underneath it.

Green Bay has already committed to LaFleur.

At any rate, his team has to show it can close the games that have kept it from becoming a championship team.
