The Chicago Bears suffered a major loss this offseason with news that the Baltimore Ravens have signed offensive coordinator Declan Doyle to be their OC.
It may not seem like a major loss, considering Ben Johnson is the one who calls the plays on offense, but veteran tight end Cole Kmet explained how losing Doyle is like losing a “valuable piece” on offense.
“Even though Doyle didn’t call the plays for us, the amount of work that he did on the offensive side of the football was immense,” Kmet said via 104.3 the Score. “You could see the day to day in practices. …Declan was very hands on with all of us … Declan’s the one addressing the offense at halftime, going over the openers that are gonna be coming up in the second half. Telling us what we need to do, what they’re seeing and how we can make adjustments. Declan was definitely a very valuable piece to us offensively.”
Now that he’s gone, the Bears are tasked with finding a replacement at offensive coordinator, and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport provided a crucial update on the Bears’ OC search.
Bears Considering In-House Promotion at Offensive Coordinator
According to Rapoport, the Bears are considering promoting pass game coordinator Press Taylor to offensive coordinator.
“In the building, if there’s an option, Press Taylor would be considered to be an offensive coordinator candidate. Has done an excellent job at several stops. Certainly someone that Ben Johnson will consider.”
Taylor has coached in the NFL since 2013 and was most notably the Jacksonville Jaguars’ offensive coordinator from 2022 to 2024 before joining the Bears this past season as the pass game coordinator.
He has experience coaching under notable head coaches like Chip Kelly, Doug Pederson, and Frank Reich. In his first season as the Jags OC, Taylor helped lead an offense that recorded the most scrimmage yards in a single season in franchise history (6,264) and guided quarterback Trevor Lawrence to back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons the following two years.
Other OC News Regarding the Bears
For those who may not be on board with the Bears promoting Taylor, he’s not the only option for Chicago.
Rapoport also reported that the Bears have requested to interview Arizona Cardinals pass game specialist Connor Senger for the OC job.
Senger is one of the fastest-rising young coaches in the NFL, who received massive praise from the Shrine Bowl’s director of football operations and player personnel, Eric Galko.
“Connor Senger is absolutely a rising star in NFL coaching world. I’ve gotten to see him for 2 years at the @ShrineBowl, and his leadership, communication, organization and creativity stand out among the OCs we’ve had the last 5 years. Special play caller and offensive leader.”
Chicago also requested to interview Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver coach Troy Walters, but he declined to stay with superstar wideouts Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
For some, not being able to call plays is not appealing. For others, having the chance to learn under Johnson will be too good to pass up.
