New York Mets Trade Prediction Lands Red Sox’ Polarizing Infielder for MLB Reliever and Catcher Prospect

The New York Mets might need to find a solution at the first base position.

With Jorge Polanco potentially on the verge of an Injured List stint, question marks have risen about one of the hot corners for the Mets.

MLBTradeRumors.com wrote (on April 10): Mets infielder Jorge Polanco was not in the lineup on Thursday as he continues to deal with an Achilles injury. New York has not ruled out an IL stint for the veteran, manager Carlos Mendoza told reporters.

A recent MLB mock trade proposal by SI.com’s Ryan Shea features the Mets linking with the Boston Red Sox to acquire Triston Casas for MLB reliever Christian Scott and catcher prospect Kevin Parada.

Mets-Red Sox Trade Idea: Does it Make Sense?

The New York Mets have resorted to utilizing Mark Vientos as their first baseman in Polanco’s absence. Vientos came up as a third baseman, so he has some experience at a hot corner, but it’s been visible that there are some uncomfortable aspects of the position for him in limited opportunities.

The thing is, would the Mets even want to trade for Triston Casas? He recently faced another injury setback, which will postpone his 2026 debut date, but the trade package that Shea proposes doesn’t feature any players that the Mets really need at the moment, so it would be a ‘taking a flyer’ type trade.

Here is why Ryan Shea believes a deal could work:

“Triston Casas would give the New York Mets a left-handed power bat with strong on-base skills, even after a tough 2025. In 29 games, he hit .182 with 3 HR, 11 RBI, and a .580 OPS before his season was cut short by injury. Despite the poor surface stats, his plate discipline and track record suggest bounce-back potential, and a move to the Mets could help stabilize his role and boost his counting stats if he hits in the middle of the order.”

Mets’ Injury Notes

The Mets have a good bit going on the injury front at the moment, as does the other 29 MLB teams.

Those injuries don’t necessarily mean New York needs to make a trade for Triston Casas, but it doesn’t hurt to speculate what a potential deal would look like. Christian Scott didn’t pitch in MLB in 2025 due to Tommy John Surgery, and last saw real innings in 2024.

With Jorge Polanco’s lingering Achilles injury, Vientos, Brett Baty, and Jared Young have all seen some playing time at first. That’s not exactly what the Mets were anticipating as a replacement for Pete Alonso.

However, it is truly too early to start thinking about trades. Given the Mets’ aggressive offseason (and in-season) trade habits, expect them to continue to be at the forefront of rumors and speculation.
