A new look at the upcoming “Joker” sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, was released Tuesday, increasing excitement for the film set to be released this fall.
More of the backstory of Gotham City’s infamous villain unfolds in the movie’s first full-length trailer — this time with love interest Harley Quinn, played by the “Poker Face” singer.
The nearly three-minute clip from “Joker: Folie à Deux” (a psychiatric term for shared psychosis that translates to “madness of two”) shows the moment when Arthur Fleck, aka Joker, and Harleen Quinzel meet at Arkham Asylum and form a relationship that quickly devolves into chaos.
“‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker,” the official synopsis reads. “While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that’s always been inside him.”
Phoenix scored an Academy Award in 2020 for the titular role in the original film, co-written and directed by Todd Phillips and inspired by DC Comics.
Gaga, an Oscar winner herself, joins Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener and Zazie Beetz in the follow-up film, set for release on Oct. 4.
