New coach Ben Johnson: I’m ‘in lockstep’ with GM Ryan Poles

New Bears coach Ben Johnson said Wednesday he’s found “alignment” with general manager Ryan Poles.

In his introductory press conference, Johnson looked at Poles, who was seated in the front row.

“We are going to win in lockstep every step of the way,” he said.

Asked why he chose the Bears, he was blunt.

“The people,” he said.

The day the Bears explained the firing of head coach Matt Eberflus, president/CEO Kevin Warren said the team would retain Poles and that he would be the point person for the job search. Warren dominated that press conference, though, issuing an eight-and-a-half minute opening statement. That led many around the league to wonder whether Poles was really in charge.

Poles was. He chose Johnson, who said that he felt a connection with the GM despite only meeting virtually. Poles researched Johnson and reached out to their mutual aquaintances. Johnson and his agent did their homework, too.

“This roster is already loaded with talent,” Johnson said.

Johnson’s alignment with Poles is notable, given that he had an opportunity to help hand-pick a general manager had he decided to join the Raiders. The Raiders interviewed GM candidate Lance Newmark, who worked with Johnson in Detroit before leaving for the Commanders last season, with the thought the two could team up.
