NASCAR will not return to Grant Park in 2027

NASCAR’s Chicago Street Race won’t return next summer, the racing organization confirmed Tuesday.

Back in June, the city and NASCAR appeared to be nearing a deal to bring the race back in 2027. But negotiations appeared to dead-end.

“While we will not be racing on the streets of Chicago in 2027 despite genuine joint efforts by both NASCAR and our partners at the city and state level, we remain committed to the Chicagoland region and would welcome the opportunity to bring the NASCAR Chicago Street Race back at some point in the future,” NASCAR said in a statement.

The street race was held for three summers, from 2023 through 2025, over the July 4th weekend in Grant Park.

For the next time around, race organizers were looking to move the event up from July to May, holding it instead closer to the 2027 Sueños Festival and Memorial Day.

In 2022, then-Mayor Lori Lightfoot inked a three-year contract with NASCAR to host the Chicago Street Race in Grant Park. That contract did allow for two possible one-year extensions in 2026 and 2027.
