Muskie time comes near season’s end at Heidecke Lake

Chris Strand put proper finishing touches on fishing at Heidecke Lake with a 42-inch muskie on Sept. 24.

“Two casts later I laid hand on a 38-incher, but he flopped and got back in the water,” he messaged. “Also one more abut 32 to 34 inches that swiped and missed the bait.”

He wasn’t using a leader while fishing a small swimbait for bass.

Fishing closes at Heidecke, the former cooling lake near Morris, for the season on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and their stories (the stories matter) around Chicago fishing, runs Wednesdays in the paper Sun-Times.
