Monte Vista football coach Johnny Millard leaving program after three seasons

DANVILLE — Johnny Millard is stepping down as Monte Vista’s football coach after leading the Danville program for three seasons, he announced Wednesday on X.

“This decision was not easy,” Millard wrote, “as my time with this program has truly been one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences of my life.”

Monte Vista missed the North Coast Section playoffs in Millard’s first two seasons.

In his third, the Mustangs finished 5-5 in the regular season before losing an overtime thriller to Bishop O’Dowd 31-28 in the first round of the Division II playoffs.

Millard’s team last fall included Washington-bound running back Julian McMahan and tight end Kellan Ford, an Arizona signee.

In his resignation post, Millard offered kind words for his players and assistant coaches, parents and school administrators, as well as the band and cheer squad.

“My decision comes from the need to focus more on my growing family, who have been my rock and my greatest source of joy,” he wrote. “They’ve sacrificed so much so I could pour my heart into this role, and it’s time for me to give that energy back to them.”

Millard, a former star player at nearby Foothill, finished with an 11-20 record.
