MLB World Reacts to Blake Snell’s First Minor League Rehab Start

The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently taking on the San Francisco Giants in a three-game series. On Wednesday, during the Dodgers-Giants game, starter Blake Snell was also making his first rehab start, which marks his first real outing of the 2026 season.

Snell, who is dealing with a shoulder bug, will be a welcome addition to the Dodgers’ starting rotation when he is ready and able.

Blake Snell pitched just one inning with Single-A Ontario on Wednesday. He threw 32 pitches in one inning of work. The game was played in San Jose, so pretty close to home for Snell. Snell is likely to go on a minor league tour before returning to the Dodgers staff.

Here are some social reactions from his outing, with further details:

@DodgerInsider: “Blake Snell threw one inning in a rehab assignment with Single-A Ontario today. He faced eight hitters, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk. He threw 32 pitches and landed 21 strikes.”
@billplunkettocr: “Blake Snell started his rehab assignment with OTB in San Jose tonight. Pitched into the second inning when a pair of errors made things messy. Threw 32 pitches in all, walked one, three hits allowed.”
@AdrianMedina_16: Blake Snell is unable to go the intended three innings as hoped for his first rehab outing of the year with Ontario: Final line : 1 IP / 3 H / 2 ER / 1 BB / 0 K 32 pitches / 21 strikes.
All in all, a solid progression outing for Blake Snell, and hopefully he will return to the rotation soon.

Blake Snell joined the Dodgers before the 2025 season after signing a five-year, $137 million contract.

He made 11 starts last year with Los Angeles in the regular season, and posted a 2.35 ERA over 61.1 innings pitched and 72 strikeouts.

He’s a two-time Cy Young winner, once with the Tampa Bay Rays and once with the San Diego Padres. When on the mound and pitching, Snellzilla is one of the game’s best starters.

Drew Tweedie wrote (on April 22), via MLBTradeRumors.com: “Shoulder fatigue in his throwing arm dates back to last year. While Snell was able to toss an excellent 95 1/3 innings between the regular season and postseason last year, the Dodgers erred on the side of caution and placed the left-hander on the IL to open the season. Snell is tabbed for three innings tonight and will need four starts to build up to the five-inning/75-pitch MLB level, placing his earliest big league return timeline as late May.”
